What’s the Deal?

Canada’s mortality statistics tell only part of the story. Abortion is not included in official mortality statistics, while MAiD deaths are generally recorded according to the underlying medical condition rather than MAiD itself. This means significant numbers of deaths can be missing from the picture when we look at how Canadians are dying. The way we track deaths influences what we prioritize as individuals and a society.

Why does this matter? Canadians are not being shown the true scale of abortion and MAiD and there is a serious lack of investment in real support for life giving alternatives.

What’s Really Happening?

Canada’s exclusion of people whose sole medical condition is a mental illness from euthanasia is currently scheduled to end on March 17, 2027.

Bill C-218 would prevent mental illness alone from qualifying a person for euthanasia. The bill is currently before Parliament.

Why does it matter? Mental illness can bring profound suffering, but recovery is possible. As Canada considers expanding euthanasia eligibility, we need to ask how we can better support people toward treatment, community and hope.

LATE-TERM ABORTIONS
BORN ALIVE

A Canadian study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology examined 13,777 second-trimester abortions performed in Quebec hospitals between 1989 and 2021. Researchers found that 1,541 cases, or 11.2%, resulted in a live birth. The researchers described live birth as an unintended outcome of second-trimester abortion and found that the risk was particularly significant between 20 and 24 weeks.

These findings raise an important question: when a baby is born alive following an attempted abortion, what happens next?

This matters because these are not simply statistics. They represent real babies who showed signs of life following an attempted abortion. Yet there is very little public discussion about what happens to these babies or how these cases are recorded.
